Can’t upload photos
We have driven today from the south rim of the Grand Canyon to Jacob Lake Inn, which is about one and a half hours from the north rim of the Grand Canyon. The lodge, which is pretty much in the middle of nowhere at 9000 feet of elevation. is actually quite nice. There is a gift shop, some snacks and drinks, and a restaurant — all right next to a gas station.
The not-so-good things (so far) are no fridge, microwave, or coffee maker in the room, and the Internet connection will not allow me to upload even resized photos to the blog. So no photos today or tomorrow. I have several pages in the works, just to let you know since I cannot post any visuals tonight — a Sedona, AZ page, another Grand Canyon page (south rim), and a page called Near The/By The/On The Side of the Road.
Since I cannot post any photos, I will write a thing or two for your entertainment, dear readers (or maybe dear reader [singular]), not really sure who is visiting when (or not)…
I will tell you a little more about our accommodations in Manitou Springs, CO, which you may remember is where we stayed in order to take a train ride to the top of Pikes Peak. The place, an AirBnB, is called “The Hobbit Hole.” From that name, you would maybe deduce it is small — and you would be right. It is:
- there is about one foot of clearance from the foot of the double bed to the small closet.
- the person sleeping on the left side of the bed has to crawl up from the foot of the bed OR crawl over the person sleeping on the right of the bed.
- the bathroom is 51-inches by 41-inches — with the shower measuring 45-inches by 20-inches (I had to open the shower door in order to bend over).
- I estimate the whole apartment is 125-square feet.
The thing is, though, we didn’t feel cramped. Well, a bit cramped in the bathroom, but it was a cute, nicely set up room (plus bathroom) for the two of us. The Internet was super fast — which is a lot more than I can say about the next two accommodations.
But I digress,,,
I was going to say something really important sounding here, like “the point is……..” but I just now realized I haven’t a clue what the point actually is.
Is it prejudiced calling the place “The Hobbit Hole”, risking the wrath of hobbits, tiny, small, and short people everywhere?
Coffee break…
So, we went to the south rim of the Grand Canyon two days and Sedona one day. Tomorrow we are driving to the north rim of the Grand Canyon. I was planning to go early to get photos at sunrise (like Mom did years ago), but when she did it she walked out of her cabin and over to the edge, sat down, and watched. We are one and a half hours away which means we would have to get up around 430AM in order to be there on time.
Yesterday at the Grand Canyon, we stayed until the end of the day to take pictures of the sunset. It was a wash. All that happened is the ring of pollution turned a pretty color, the rest of the sky stayed as is and I could barely see the rock formations anyway. Between being too far from the north rim AND figuring that the sunrise will be disappointing, we aren’t going to do that (sorry Mom).We will just get up whenever, go have breakfast in the restaurant, and go take another couple hundred photos in the Grand Canyon.
We will be here at Jacob Lake for two nights, then we have a short drive to Panguitch, Utah (probably via Lake Powell). I have high hopes that the tiny house in Panguitch has usable, full-time Internet so that I can get some more photos online. We shall see…
Thanks for reading.
